Hearing
Johnny Martin (http://www.johnnymartin.com) sing is like
entering another era. In this case, it would be the pre-rock
& roll days of crooners such as Frank Sinatra and Bing
Crosby.
Comparing anybody to the mighty Sinatra would
be considered blasphemous to some, but this Portland,
Oregon-based vocalist certainly has the talent to dreamily
convey lost love and romantic evenings with the satin
smoothness and cool air of Sinatra in his prime.
"Sugar
Pill" is a perfect Valentine's Day gift. On tracks like "When
Your Lover Has Gone" and "Summer Wind," Martin's voice takes
on a cinematic feel; you can imagine him narrating scenes from
a movie. It's a breathtaking change of pace from a music
industry that has become too obsessed with sex and violence.
Martin returns style and class to pop music, using the
timeless appeal of standards to remind us the high standards
artists once had.
There's not a dud in the bunch. The
highlight is probably "Stars Fell on Alabama," which is
stunningly beautiful. |
